What Is 1U Colocation?
In order to understand the term 1U colocation, it is helpful to define each of the terms.
Colocation:
Colocation is when your business rents physical space in a data center in order to house their own servers and other computing hardware. The server is owned by your company but the colocation provider supplies you with the physical space to locate it, the power to run it, the security to ensure that the equipment and its data are safe, as well as all of the network resources needed such as ample bandwidth and IP addresses. 1U:
In a colocation facility, your equipment is housed on racks. The unit of measurement that is used when you are talking about rack space is “U”. 1U is equal to 1.75 inches in height. Therefore a piece of equipment that is 3.5 inches high will require 2U of rack space.
1U Colocation:
1U colocation is an economical, entry-level colocation service. It is appropriate if you require a small amount of rack space for your equipment. If you need more space then you will need to consider a larger service such as a half rack or full rack. The following diagram will give you an idea about the relative space taken up on a colocation rack by equipment that is 1U, 2U and 4U in size.
Does Your Business Need Colocation?
There are many good reasons your business might need colocation services. Some of the main benefits include:
Getting the Features of an IT Department at a Lower Cost:
If your business could benefit from the useful features of an IT department but you don’t have the capital to set up and run your own, then colocation hosting can provide you with those features at a relatively low monthly fee.
Having Access to Redundant Power Supplies & Networks:
Colocation facilities have backup or redundant power supplies and networks to ensure that you are always up and running. If there are power or network failures, the backup systems will kick in so you don’t have to worry about losing data or being unavailable to your customers when they need you.
Locating Your Server in an Optimal Environment:
Servers generate a lot of heat and are susceptible to damage if they are not in a controlled environment. A colocation hosting facility can provide your equipment with a consistent and optimal temperature to make sure that it doesn’t overheat. The facility will also have a redundant cooling system to make sure that if the primary system fails there is a backup that will kick in.
Keeping Your Data and Equipment Safe:
A colocation site can give you security features that your own facility might not have or want to invest in, such as PIN keypads, biometric readers, and around the clock surveillance.

How Much Does Colocation Cost?
The cost of colocation hosting can range anywhere from $40 per U per month to over $400 per U per month. It really varies depending on the services that you need.
The price that you pay for your colocation service is largely determined by the amount of rack space that you require for your equipment, but there are also other factors that will come into play with the pricing, including:
- Setup fees
- Internet speeds with above-average bandwidth
- Number of IP addresses required
- Support fees
